Creative Process Behind United Grit

This is a recap of a +1 year personal project started in 2023 that has now been turned into a brand with purpose! It all started with my desire to get back into lettering, learn forms of mid-century styles and up my knowledge of state facts.

In the creative process, I sought to - Honor the grit that made America, enlighten others with state legacy, and create a healthy pride for local heritage. The brand is a tribute to the rich heritage of the 50 States and Territories, capturing the spirit, slogans, and unique identity that define each one. Every hand-drawn piece we create goes beyond aesthetics—it’s a celebration of the resilience and diversity that unite us all. United Grit was born out of a desire to help today’s youth connect more deeply with their roots and articulate the essence of their nation. 

With a blend of timeless Mid-Century design and patriotic slogans, our t-shirts offer more than just a stylish look—they’re an invitation to explore the stories that have shaped our country.

It started with collecting type specimens and then as I waited to pick up my kids from school I killed time emulating, sketching and dreaming. It started off with a design for each state but then grew to a state, slogan and capital theme for each state — thus creating a staggering 150 designs that I dug through.
